A Dragon’s Alphabet – Chapter 19 – S is for Scorching – #AtoZChallenge

Greene left Paul alone and went out into the field. She was so angry. She was scared. She was anxious. All her negative emotions swirled like a storm inside of her and she had to let it out.

Over an area of plane grass a good distance away from her fort she spewed flames. They spread out like fluid over the vegetation. Some small animals went running or flying away. She roared before breathing fire again.

It had been a while since she had released her pent-up frustration this way. The last time would have been several years ago when she got into an argument based on the edge of territory at a dragon assembly. She tried to stand her ground, but the other dragon was bigger, older, and much stronger than she was. He was a good dragon, better than he was, and he thought that he deserved to have more than he did.
Territory boundaries are sacred to dragons and never change once they’ve been made.

That’s why it’s so important to choose a good territory to claim. At the time she had been so glad when Obsidian stepped in, but she hadn’t known what would have happened if some of her territory was taken away from her. She was sure that it would have been taken piece by piece until there was nothing left but a representation of how she was a failure of a dragon.

She spewed flames over the grass just as she did now. She created a scorched area in her fields. It would grow back, but it made her feel better.

After she breathed fire a third time she began to wonder what she was so angry about. She knew what she was so scared and anxious about, but was she scared for Paul? As she thought, she wondered if his reaction wasn’t him declining to help her. Maybe he really thought he could do nothing.

She wondered for a moment before flying back to the fort. She felt a lot better as she flew, but she couldn’t help but notice the storm clouds on the horizon. She hoped they weren’t made by the wizard.
